Carloway Broch is one of the best preserved Broch`s in the Hebrides. Brochs were built in Scotland in the first four centuries A.D. to a standard pattern, probably for defensive purposes. This one is 30 feet high at the highest remaining point and is spiralled by interior passages.

Moving on to the Black House of Arnol. Black houses were built as a combined byre, barn and home in the tradition of ancient "long-houses" which have existed in Northern Europe for over a thousand years. Complete with contents and burning peat fire it consists of a but and ben and a byre, all leading off each other with thatched roof and thick walls.
