South Island & HarrisHeading south from Stornoway towards Tarbert takes in some fantastic varied scenery. Starting with the barren Lewis peat moor, getting increasingly mountainous nearing Tarbert with majestic views of Clisham, the highest point in the outer Hebrides. Passing through the mountain pass with excellent views of the rugged countryside and wildlife which can often include red deer, otters and golden eagle we pass Clisham at 2622 ft. Rocks here (lewision gneisses) have been discovered to be the oldest in the world. Powerful forces of ice and sea in the distant past have carved and polished a dramatic landscape of stark sea-cliffs, sweeping beaches and rugged heather uplands. Guests have time to browse round the pretty village of Tarbert before returning to Stornoway. <<Back |
