Iona (full day)We start this fascinating excursion with a short walk through the colourful picture postcard town of Tobermory before joining the coaches for the wonderfully scenic trip down through Salen then following the West Coast road to Fionnphort. Boarding the ferry on foot to enjoy the short (5 min) ferry journey across to the tiny island of Iona. Iona has been the cradle of Scottish Christianity since St Columba landed here in 563AD. Just 3 miles long and never more than 1½ miles wide, Iona is a thin cut of land steeped in history, religion and also the burial place of more than 60 kings. The present Abbey dates from medieval times and is open all Year round to pilgrims who come from all over the world. A short ferry ride across to Mull and scenic coach journey through the Ross of Mull for a visit to the breathtaking Duart Castle standing proudly on a cliff top overlooking the surrounding area. <<Back |
